Windows

SmartScreen warnings, WSL 2, Blame Runtime, and where the logs are on Windows.

Blame needs Windows 10 or 11 with WSL 2. It runs agents in its own WSL distribution, Blame Runtime.

SmartScreen warns about the installer

The installer is not code-signed yet: signing through SignPath Foundation is pending. SmartScreen may warn you: choose More info → Run anyway.

You can check the download against the release's SHA256SUMS file first (see Install).

WSL is not installed

Run this in an administrator terminal, then restart:

wsl --install

If Blame says to enable WSL2, enable it in Windows, restart if prompted, then run the Blame Runtime setup again from Settings → Desktop → Blame Runtime.

Blame Runtime runs on WSL 1

Blame Runtime needs WSL 2. Convert it, then retry:

wsl --set-version BlameRuntime 2

Repair Blame Runtime

Settings → Desktop → Blame Runtime shows Install, Repair, or Check again, depending on its state. Start over → Reset deletes the sandbox and installs a fresh one: your projects are not touched, and running local previews stop. When the automatic repair fails, Blame shows Blame Runtime needs a repair: Repair reinstalls the parts that are broken, and your projects are not touched.

While the runtime is not ready, choose Use Direct instead to run a story in your project folder, without isolation.

Claude Code in stories

On Windows, stories that run in Blame Runtime can't use Claude Code yet. Chat can. For stories, connect another provider: see AI providers.

Telemetry and update check

The installer lets you turn off usage telemetry and the update check at launch. Settings → Desktop → Privacy has the same switches.

Logs

  • The app's log: %APPDATA%\dev.blame.desktop\logs\blame-live.log
  • Each story's setup, agent, and merge logs: .blame\logs\ in its worktree
  • A story's preview: its Run logs tab
